Environmental Benefit

Alkaline batteries that end up in landfills are crushed, leaking their contents into the landfill and possibly contaminating local areas and water sources. While alkaline batteries now contain very low quantities of mercury, they still contain trace amounts of mercury and this along with other toxic chemicals are a hazard that is easy to avoid. Many areas such as the state of California and many areas in Europe have required alkaline batteries to be recycled but because there are little resources for recycling and because recycling alkaline batteries costs the consumer money, few alkaline batteries are recycled. NiMH batteries are much easier to recycle and because they last a long time, much less waste is created. NiMH batteries are easy for consumers to recycle because this type of battery is easy to recycle into new batteries and there is wide support for accepting these batteries.
